🌅 India Rising
NASA scientists and space fanatics alike were left scratching their heads as a strange, cigar-shaped, interstellar object was found falling through our solar system.
When I first caught wind of the mysterious interstellar object named ‘Oumuamua hurtling through our solar system in 2017, it piqued my curiosity in an exceptional way. It wasn’t just its high velocity and its unique trajectory, but the unsettling appearance and characteristics that distinguished it from anything we had ever seen before.
As a space fanatic, I knew I had to know everything about it-immediately. Now, as media reports and speculative theories suggest that NASA is “terrified” of it, it’s essential to dig into the details to discern fact from fiction.
From Far Away Yonder
‘Oumuamua, a Hawaiian word meaning “scout” or “messenger from afar arriving first” is mysterious and unique, becoming the first known interstellar object detected passing through our Solar System. Its high speed (315,000 km/h or 196,000 mph) and hyperbolic trajectory made it evident that this object was just passing by, with no intention (or capability) of orbiting the Sun.
This peculiar object was first discovered on October 19, 2017, by the Pan-STARRS1 telescope located at Haleakalā Observatory on Maui, Hawaii. Immediately, the object’s hyperbolic trajectory indicated that it was not gravitationally bound to the Sun, suggesting an origin outside our Solar System.
From scientific observations, ‘Oumuamua, designated 1I/2017 U1 (with the “1I” signifying “first interstellar”), displayed characteristics that were distinct from typical Solar System objects. The object’s elongated, tumbling motion presented an aspect ratio of about 10:1, which is unprecedented among known asteroids and comets within our Solar System.
