🌅 India Rising
We slid into the outdoor patio seats at a favorite upscale brewpub shortly after 5 PM on Friday. The air was chilly, but the waning sunshine was too enticing to pass up. When our waitress asked if she could bring us something to drink, I asked for their best margarita on the rocks with a salted rim. I glanced at my wife and relished her raised eyebrows and playful smirk. When possible, I enjoy surprising her.
The reaction visible on my wife’s beautiful face was owing to being caught off guard by my doing something out of the norm. It’s rare these days that I decide to drink alcohol because it often leaves me feeling sluggish and headachy.
But sometimes, we need to veer off course and do something different, even if that something is small. They say variety is the spice of life, and I think they’re onto something. It’s not necessarily about the variety but more the intentional choice to do new things, shake up our routine, or allow ourselves to be uncomfortable.
Doing the same thing, day in and day out, causes us to operate on autopilot, which can squelch creativity, promote boredom, and hinder engagement. The last thing I expected when we retired was falling into the monotony of a boring routine.
How it started
We retired in June of 2021, sold our home and most of our things, and embarked on an adventure crisscrossing the United States with our teardrop-shaped travel trailer. We weren’t sure how long we’d live the semi-nomadic life or the opportunities retirement would bring us.
Traveling the country has certainly been exciting and also eye-opening. We’ve learned many new skills and problem-solved our way out of some interesting predicaments. We find that mastering previously foreign skills keeps our brains firing and brings us a great deal of enjoyment. We’ve also shared many memorable experiences along the way.
Being woken up at dawn in Grand Canyon National Park by the sound of elk bugling was one of our most awe-inspiring experiences. It felt surreal to look out our camper window and see two bull elk at ours.
