🌅 India Rising

Yesterday was my annual pilgrimage to the oncology center. It’s always a little tough for me, even though I know the odds of the cancer coming back are almost nil. My sadness comes not so much from my situation, but the reminder of life’s endpoint as I enter the clinic.

I’ve been to all types of clinics in my life for both career and personal health, but the ones located within a large hospital always give a different feel. For one, they are a lot busier as you see people there for all types of diseases, from all walks of life. You may be standing at the elevator waiting with a crowd; that time gives you a glimpse into all the ways the human body can deteriorate. Yesterday was one such case where I counted no less than 4 patients, all in their late 70’s, coming out of the main entrance in what almost looked like a conga line.

They were all on walkers, moving very slow, and there wasn’t enough room to enter the doorway at the same time. Everyone trying to enter was very respectful and patiently waited until the doorway was clear.

Sitting in the doctor’s office, I was one of the youngest patients there, which is unfortunately the norm when I go. I often get the, “are you in the right place,” stare. As I sat there, an older gentleman came in who also had difficulty walking. He somehow got the pavilion wrong, sadly walking away knowing it may take another 20 minutes to reach the right office.

On my way out the clinic, as I waited for the elevator, another man approached, on a walker, going to a higher floor.

What I and others take for granted every day was the precious ability to walk, and it was on full display in the hospital.

When I was in my teens, I was obsessed with bodybuilding. I had almost every bodybuilder on my wall, cutout from magazines.

An often quoted saying among body builders is not to skip leg day. Leg workouts tend to be very painful and not as much fun as working the upper body.
