Growing Up With Excess
My best friend grew up in a big house with a lot of people and a lot of stuff. I was blessed to be able to have many extracurriculars and to take trips with the band and German class.
My friends family was unhappy though, it mostly stemmed from my dad. I often wondered if the depression was caused by his high-stress job as an electrical engineer in the emerging cell phone industry and the excess of stuff we had.
As I got older, I was convinced of this and urged him to downsize and get an easier job. He’d often cry on my shoulder for feeling helpless, and twelve-year-old me didn’t know what to do.
My siblings joined me in the efforts of downsizing. We often told him that we didn’t need all of this. We just wanted him to be happy. We would be happy in a small house.
He carried on with his stressful life, refused to work for a smaller salary, got divorced, and died in his huge house alone five years ago.
I’m not able to discern the cause of the grim events.
Maybe my friends child self was right, or maybe it was something else. It was enough to cause me to set out to live my life in an entirely different way. My journey started eight years ago, three years before he passed on.
The Big Change
The year my friends parents divorced, my partner and I set out to live a life against the grain. We left the day after I graduated college with my bachelor’s degree in business administration. Even with a chunk of unwanted debt hovering over me, I knew that I didn’t want to work for anyone in the corporate world, or even in the public world. I wanted to be free.
With only our sedan, a trunk of camping goods, a camp kitchen, and the essentials (yes, art supplies are essentials), we drove out West to see what life was all about.
