🌅 India Rising

It’s been three years since I threw away all my IVF medications.

I felt immediately lighter as I unloaded the literal and figurative weight of two sharps containers full of syringes, 10 boxes of unopened progesterone bottles, canisters of estrogen pills, several containers of human chorionic gonadotropin (HcG), and five unopened boxes of Pregnyl, another variation of the same hormone.

I’d been holding onto those drugs—and the hope of an eventual pregnancy—for far too long.

The high-stakes gamble of IVF

IVF feels like flipping a coin with one side that’s heavier than the other. You know the odds aren’t in your favor, but you pay for the privilege to play again and again anyway.

A National Institutes of Health analysis of 2,900 women undergoing IVF found the rates of live births for women 30–35 were just under 40%.

Finding a clinic we could afford was the first big triumph. The average cost of one IVF cycle can range from $12,000 to $17,000, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. That doesn’t include the medication — which was close to $6,000 I had to put on a credit card — or the weekly blood tests or ultrasounds. Although a few states require insurance companies to cover fertility treatments, most do not.

We’d already spent several years diagnosing our fertility problems — a frustrating combination of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids and a low count of slow-moving sperm—and trying other treatments. We also spent a fair amount of time considering other options, including fostering and adoption, and doing nothing at all while we tried to figure out what our next steps should be. By the time we made our first visit to the clinic in New York after spending six months on a waiting list, I was already 35. The doctor told me my odds were still good. Then he told me I should go on a strict keto diet, severely restricting most fruits and vegetables, and stop exercising immediately.

I’d never heard anyone in the medical field tell me a plant-heavy diet and moderate exercise could be harmful, so I had some questions.
