Around 91000 thousand seat remain vacant out of around 3 lakhs undergraduate and post graduation seats in the degree colleges and other state universities and state open university .
Before the academic session began, the department’s performance tracking cell (PTC) had decided to hold the admission for UG and PG courses in six rounds instead of different phases of admission. Later the department slashed the last two rounds from the phase-I admission and completed the process with a phase-II admission with two rounds.
While the UG phase-I admission process completed on August 28, PG phase-I admission process ended on September 4. The phase-II admission of the UG and PG courses has been completed by October 13.
The higher education department conducted phase-II admission this year too after around 1.1 lakh UG and PG seats remained vacant after the phase-I admission was over. Earlier, it had decided not to hold this second phase of admission this year to reduce the time of the admission process.
Last year, the state had 1,022 degree colleges with 2.51 lakh UG seats. This year, 20,000 UG seats have been increased and 25 institutions have been added to the list. Though seats and the number of institutions have been increased, there is no significant increase in the number of students.
Last year, 2580 out of 15,827 PG seats in 79 colleges and universities were lying vacant. This year, Odisha has 27,816 PG seats in 110 higher education institutions. Similar situation like UG.
“Several institutions have taken permission for increasing seats in different subjects. Even some institutions have started offering PG courses this year to attract students. But response from students remains the same as last year,”
