This week, I met my best friend after seven years. In the village, we were neighbors. So we are childhood best friends. He was in the city then, so we planned to meet at my house.
Before starting, let me tell you about him. He has two brothers, three sisters, and parents. There was a total of eight people in the house (including him). In the village, the only source of income was farming and nothing else. He used to help his parents in farming.
In the evening, we used to play cricket and eat together. I was 12 back then and he was 16. And I remember this vividly when I asked him about his dream and he said about being a cricketer. I used to see him practicing at night with other good players.
After some time, I came to the city with my parents to study. My best friend stayed in the village. And I don’t know what happened after that, but I was meeting him this week after so long.
(This week. When I met him.)
In a fun way, I asked, “Can I have an autograph, sir?” at which we both laughed.
I asked him, “How’s life? How’s his family doing? How’s his practice going?”.
“All are doing well, and I have stopped practicing,” he said.
“Why?” I asked.
“Responsibilities,” he said.
“Responsibilities?” I asked.
(FYI — He is the third child after two sisters.)
He said, “After your leaving, one year later, my sisters got marriage offers, so to arrange funds I went to another city for work. In the next six months, both sisters got married. I took a loan and did the marriage. And after two years, I renovated my old house in the village. That’s why!”
Lastly, he said, “I’m getting married, and I’m here to give you and your family an invitation.”
I was so happy for his marriage. And he is staying with us for a few days.
But he showed me that family is everything. And you have to value what you have. One more thing that I think is valuable is sometimes the weight of responsibilities will be heavier than the dreams. And choosing responsibilities and not running away shows the real sign of a hero.
